For the contiguous US, the first 9 months of 2012 are in uncharted territory with regards to temperature. Data from the National Climatic Data Center shows the mean temperature was 59.82ºF, well above any other year since 1895.

No word yet on whether all the hot air from the presidential election is contributing to this record.
If you are wondering, for the year through August, NCDC has the global mean temperature as the ninth warmest. I suspect 2012 has a pretty good shot at being the hottest year on record in the contiguous US, but will probably fall shy of the global record.
Wow. As of now, a full degree! That is huge.
