Next Week Looks Active

This post is dedicated to friend and long-time Wasatch Weather Weenies reader Kevin Moore who passed away yesterday after a multiyear battle with pancreatic cancer.   Kevin was a devoted husband and father, avid biker and skier, and lover of life.  He set an example of how to live life to the fullest when facing the greatest of challenges and uncertainties.

Snow is once again stacking up to some degree in the Wasatch.  Through 2 PM today (Thursday), Alta-Collins has received 8 inches since Wednesday morning with about an inch of water.  Dense stuff, but that's really what we need.  It's hit or miss convective snow showers today, some intense and producing lightning and thunder, so perhaps they can get a little more.  Tomorrow through early Monday looks dry, so a bit of a break for the holiday weekend.

I'm more encouraged by the medium-range forecasts than I've been for some time.  The pattern for next week looks like change we can believe in with a series of deep troughs moving across the west.  Most members of the Utah Snow Ensemble pick things up late Monday or Monday night at Alta.  All members are producing at least an inch of snow water equivalent from late Monday through Saturday and the mean of both the Euro ENS and GEFS is close to 3 inches.

The forecast models have snatched defeat from the jaws of victory several times this year.  Let's hope that's not the case this time.
