Pretty remarkable water numbers from this latest storm.
At 7 PM MDT, the NWS reported a record calendar-day rainfall of 2.39".
The 2.39" appears to be the 2nd largest calendar-day rainfall on record, topped only by the 2.64" on 3 May 1901.

In other news, the Collins stake sits at around 8 inches.

Great way to start the 2025 - 26 water year. Btw, do you plan to do a post mortem on the 2024 - 25 water year?
ReplyDeleteNext big question - do these big storms, particularly at this time of year, correlate with big following snow seasons? I think the 9/26/1982 rain event was followed by the huge 1982-83 snow year that resulted in the State Street floods.
ReplyDeleteI grabbed data of historical precipitation at the SLC airport, and checked to see how predictive rainfall in October is on total winter precipitation (sum of the following Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, and Mar precip). In the 150-year history, the amount of rain in October is not very correlated with winter precipitation (rho = .138) and is not predictive of winter precipitation being larger than the 75th percentile value.
DeleteI looked at the data recorded at Alta, but there were lots of missing values, and I didn't have time to clean it up. I think it's a safe bet that winter precip at the airport is highly correlated with snowfall at Alta, though.
