I especially liked Rush Limbaugh's comment, "The heat index, manufactured by the government," which got me thinking, is Rush Right? You decide. According to Wikipedia, the heat index was developed in 1978 by George Winterling (he called it the "humiture"), a broadcast meteorologist with WJXT in Jacksonville. Heat index calculations presently used by the National Weather Service are based on work done by R. G. Steadman, then of the Textiles and Clothing Department at Colorado State University.
