Throw in some smoke and it's downright depressing.

  3. Jim, here is a thought:

Every year different weather organizations put together a "winter season forecast" usually encompassing the entire country. Is it even possible to closely predict what the future winter will hold? Should these forecasts have any weight placed on their contents?

    1. For the most part, no, although a strong el nino or la nina loads the dice a bit in some regions (but not all). I have a number of posts on this subject. http://wasatchweatherweenies.blogspot.com/2016/08/silly-season-returns.html is one example.
