Wow, What a Beauty!

A spectacular line of thunderstorms moved through the northern Salt Lake Valley this evening.  The radar image below shows the line with four strong cells lined up like pearls on a string.

Here's a few photos from the avenues showing a beautiful shelf cloud, which formed on the leading edge of the cool, thunderstorm outflow (click to enlarge a bit).

And, looking west.  If you look carefully, you can see the bright sunlit foot of dust or other particles stirred up near the ground by the outflow boundary as it pushed northward.

Who needs TV?

Tour of Utah Forecast Post-Mortem (see previous post):  It appears stage 1 went off without a major weather event, although reports are of some wet conditions near the end of the day.  Let's hope the weather continues to cooperate.

  1. Great shots Dr Jim, We got a 1/2 inch and have turned off the water for a few days.

  2. Beautiful photos! I was near the western edge of the storm, picked up 0.30" in under 10 min. I am only speculating about this, but i think that light colored stuff could be mist or very fine raindrops that blew out ahead of the rain curtain into the sunlight. I saw some of that on the leading edge as it came in. The ground seemed too wet already for any blowing dust... but I can't say for sure.

    1. Yeah, dust was a total guess and a weak hypothesis. I was trying to get something posted up quickly and there are some dust sources in that area, although you might be right that with all the rain lately, there are more likely possibilities.
