Dust on Crust...Again!

Another disappointing storm.  3" thusfar at Alta-Collins.  My forecast from a couple of days ago was a clear case of irrational overexuberance.  It snowed all day, but very lightly.  I can remember when a frontal passage in the Wasatch was a guaranteed dump.  Not this year.

On the other hand, the great thing about snow is that it always looks great in photos.  Remember what Billy Crystal used to say, "It's not how you feel, it's how you look."  Powder works like that.  If you can't ski good powder, you can at least fool your friends.

First, start with low-density snow produced primarily by dendritic crystals such as those seen below.


Take a photo of a picturesque skin track that looks like winter wonderland.


Make high speed turn with good compression so that it looks knee deep.

Tell your friends the skiing was surprisingly good.
